Europe and the UK: hotel review of Mercure Madrid Santo Domingo, Madrid

Welcome: 7/10

It was an efficient and friendly welcome with room keys ready when we all trundled into the busy lobby after a fast train ride from Barcelona. Our bags were taken to our rooms speedily and after a few minutes to freshen up we were in the historic underground bar sampling tapas and Spanish wines, ready to see the town.

Accommodation: 8/10

The rooms are spacious, well designed and comfortable. Many are individually themed with colourful murals painted by local artists, which gives them a lot of character, reflecting the country’s vibrant style. It’s a nice surprise and it makes you feel like you are in the heart of Spain, rather than just in another nondescript big city property.

Ambience: 7/10

This is a busy hotel right in the heart of Madrid, so there is a feeling of excitement as people come and go. The establishment provides all the comforts plus a touch of panache, with its lush vertical garden (apparently the biggest in Spain) and original pieces of 18th and 19th century art sprinkled throughout.

Facilities: 8/10

A real winner is the 16th century cellar which was discovered only a few years ago. With its original bricks dating back to the Spanish Inquisition, it is loaded with character and perfect for cocktails. Another plus is the rooftop pool with views across the city, which also looks onto the vertical garden. Its restaurant, the Belvedere Room, overlooks the Royal Palace and is stunning by night.

Service: 8/10

Everything is done efficiently here, whether it is ordering at meal times, storing your bags or asking for directions. Basically, it is a well oiled machine for tourists on the go.

Overall: 76%

A great four-star hotel in a convenient location; you can walk to most of the city’s highlights and best night spots. It’s comfortable, affordable, full of character and is essentially a great place to call home while in Madrid.
